News of Garth Brooks’ divorce undeniably left a lot of fans surprised, even shocked. Their 15 years of marriage ended in 2001 with a long and highly-publicized legal battle and one of the most expensive settlements in the country music industry. So, what exactly happened to them?

A post shared by Janina Costales (@janinacostales)

Garth Brooks‘ first wife, Sandy Mahl, first caught Brooks’ attention after she threw a punch and got her hand stuck in a women’s restroom in a bar. Apparently, it was love at first swing for the couple who soon dated while attending Oklahoma State University. Brooks and Mahl bonded over music, and soon after graduating, the two moved to Nashville, where Mahl played a pivotal role in Brooks’ career. She was even credited in two of Garth Brooks’ songs from his first album.

In an ironic twist of fate, Brooks’ decision to lay low from his career in 1999 and become a better father to his three daughters made him realize the worst – that he can no longer be a husband to his wife. The two married in 1986 and finally got divorced in 2001.

In an interview with Garth Brooks’ first wife for a documentary on her ex-husband, she shared that what did them in was the time they spent apart. As a touring musician, he would be gone for eight to ten weeks, and after that, people would constantly yank and pull him to parties. There were also awards shows that he constantly went to. So, they grew apart really quickly.

After the documentary was released, Brooks said that he learned a lot from Mahl’s comments. For him, she was phenomenal, but there was just so much going on for him, and there were things she was trying to tell him that he didn’t hear until the biography.

The couple announced that they were separating in March 2000, then filed for divorce on November 6, 2000, citing irreconcilable differences at Davidson County Circuit Court, Tennessee. When the divorce was finalized on December 17, 2001, Sandy Mahl received $125 million as a divorce settlement, one of the most expensive in country music history. As for Garth Brooks’ daughters, the couple got joint custody though the children have spent more time with their dad.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood’s marriage followed in 2005. On the other hand, Mahl never remarried and chose to become a businesswoman. She co-founded the Heart Ranch, an animal rehabilitation and wildlife rescuing organization in Rogers County, Oklahoma. And despite their messy divorce, the couple are on good terms now and have managed to co-parent their three daughters really well.

Garth Brooks’ divorce may have saddened many fans, but it definitely showed that love is not all butterflies and rainbows. And that letting go can be the hardest thing in love, but it can also be the best thing that anyone could ever do for their loved one.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood might be couple goals now, but Garth was married before, and then things got awkward.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are totally couple goals these days, so much so that a lot of fans are shocked to find out that Garth was married before. He was first married to his ex-wife, Sandy, before he really became famous.

Then, when he was on the road and at shows all the time, his marriage apparently began to suffer. In later interviews, Garth would admit that he never realized how hard things were for his then-wife. In fact, he seems to have nothing but respect for her now.

Yet after their marriage ended, one awkward detail emerged about the whole relationship and how Trisha Yearwood factored in. Not only did Garth have to pay $125 million in his divorce settlement, but he also has this one lingering detail that makes him look not so squeaky clean to fans.

Though Garth split from his ex-wife when his children were young, he wound up taking time off from his musical work to be at home with them. When Garth and Sandy began divorce proceedings in 1999, their youngest child was three.

Fortunately, after his marriage ended, Brooks seemed to realize that he was missing out on family time, so he dedicated himself to being there for his girls every day. Garth even told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview that he literally stayed home with them daily, but that the time flew by so quickly he can’t believe it even now.

That’s not the only tidbit that Garth shared with Ellen, though.

When the conversation between Ellen and Garth segued into his relationship with Trisha Yearwood, things got a little awkward. Ellen started off by confirming that Garth and Trisha had “been friends for a long long time” before eventually getting together “romantically.”

In fact, Garth stated, he met Trisha Yearwood in 1987. For anyone who already forgot, that’s one year after Garth married Sandy Mahl.

A brief pause after Garth explained that he and Sandy divorced in 2000 and then that he and “Miss Yearwood” married in 2005 suggested something a bit more uncomfortable was unfolding. At that point, Garth shifted seemingly uneasily in his seat, too.

  • when the mughal empire fell in 1857 it became
  • He even asked Ellen if she “really,” “seriously” wanted to “get into this” after she asked about his relationship timeline with Trisha. Why the awkwardness? Because it sounded like Garth was already head over heels for Trisha while he was still in the early years of his marriage to his ex-wife.

After a few more uneasy moments and some hesitation on Brooks’ part, he admitted that after a mutual friend introduced he and Trisha, the friend asked him what he thought of her.

Garth relayed that he told his friend “Well, it’s strange cuz I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife but I’d been married for 13 months.” Yikes…

But the country singer elaborated that he had some internal battles with himself, thinking that because he was married, it “had to be right.” After all, he and Sandy had gone to college together and had their marriage ‘in front of God’ and everything.

So, the story went, Garth realized he wasn’t sure that he knew what he wanted to be doing in his life, because of having met Trisha. It sounded like his perception of marriage and commitment changed, and instead of going with ‘commitment,’ he went with what felt right in his gut.

Speaking about Trisha, Garth called her “the real deal” and related how deeply he feels about his now-wife of over 15 years. Ellen called the story “beautiful,” and yet the awkwardness didn’t dissipate right away.

Because Garth essentially admitted that he fell in love with Trisha upon meeting her, and that he knew at that time that his marriage was already over, even though it had only begun.

After he met Trisha, Garth went on to have his three daughters with Sandy Mahl, though he says now that the two exes and Trisha agreed that they would work together to raise the Brooks girls.

Though the audience applauded him, and Ellen congratulated Garth for both ‘trying to do the right thing’ in his first marriage and getting to be with the person his ‘soul’ wanted him to be with, there’s still a lingering sense of discomfort with the whole story.

It’s almost like Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz’s ‘love story,’ which features them both being in committed relationships with other people, yet ‘finding’ one another… even in the middle of those relationships.

And for Garth’s ex, fans have to wonder how she feels about him spilling that uncomfortable detail about their early marriage. Maybe there’s a reason Garth paid such a hefty divorce settlement amount after all.

NEXT: This Is Why Fans Say Garth Brooks Should Actually Retire This Time

One of the most fascinating parts of the new Garth Brooks documentary is his relationship with his ex-wife, Sandy Mahi…

Sandy came forward in the A&E documentary Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On.

If you watched Garth Brooks’s 2019 A&E documentary Garth Books: The Road I’m On, you likely came to the conclusion that the country music singer and his ex-wife, Sandy Mahl, are on pretty good terms.

Even though both admitted that their 15-year marriage had its fair share of challenges, Sandy spoke very highly of Garth’s musical talent during the A&E special. But perhaps the most telling part of the entire documentary is that Sandy was supportive of her ex-husband marrying Trisha Yearwood.

Following their divorce in 2001, Sandy and Garth worked hard to co-parent their three daughters — Taylor, 28, August, 26, and Allie, 24.

“They saw both their parents in the morning and both their parents in the evening, and for 14 years,” Garth told the Tennessean. “That was how we ran it, because we knew it was right for those kids. If you did what was right for the kids, you were going to do what was right for you. It was simple.”

Around then, the “The River” singer began seeing Trisha, who he had first met back in 1987 while recording a demo. According to Garth’s eldest daughter, when it was Garth’s turn to cook, his dinners would frequently include frozen chicken and boxed macaroni and cheese, adding “he could not cook to save his life.” So when Trisha came along, Taylor said that she and her sisters were “real excited.”

But it wasn’t only Taylor who saw the positivity Trisha brought to their family. As revealed in the documentary, when Garth asked Trisha to marry him, Sandy would supposedly tell him, “I think this is a really good move for you, and I think this is a really good move for our children.”

Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Sandy and Garth struggled to make ends meet while living in Nashville, Tennessee. But as Garth’s success grew, their challenges took on a new form, according to Sandy.

  • “He’d be gone eight to 10 weeks at a time. He’d come home, [and] there would be number-one parties, or shows, or CMAs, or ACMs, American Music Awards, so it was constantly going,” Sandy said during the documentary. “But we both grew apart really, really quickly.”

After hearing Sandy’s comments about their marriage during the ’90s, Garth told Us Weekly that he was “really surprised” to hear how she felt.

“She was phenomenal,” he said. “[I was] gone so much on the road [during our marriage], there were things I guess she was [trying to tell] me that I didn’t hear until this biography. It’s rare you get to hear the other side. I just saw her and I think I hugged her harder than I ever have now that I know things that either I didn’t hear or that she didn’t say until now.”

Trisha and Garth tied the knot in 2005 and have been together ever since.

“We’re both very independent people who run our own ships.”

Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks may seem to be country music’s strongest couple, but the “Walkaway Joe” singer isn’t afraid to admit that sometimes, that isn’t the case. In a new interview with Us Weekly, she said their 15-year marriage “can be difficult” at times, mostly because they’re both strong-minded, leading individuals.

“We’re both very independent people who run our own ships. And sometimes when two people are driving two big ships, it can be difficult,” she said. That became especially true when the world stopped and concert tours were cancelled at the onset of the pandemic. Even though they were previously together often, the sudden lack of work was definitely an adjustment for them both.

“It wasn’t a huge change, but it was enough that there was really nowhere to go,” Yearwood explained. “I think it was kind of navigating; how do we stay alphas, stay independent, do our own thing, feel like we run our own lives, but be a couple. It’s a balance where sometimes one person is running the ship and sometimes the other person is, and sometimes you’re going to butt heads.”

Both musicians have previously experienced divorce—Brooks was married to songwriter Sandy Mahl with whom he had three daughters, and Yearwood was wife to both Christopher Latham and Robert Reynolds before 1999, per Us— so they’re no strangers to tension. The difference this time around is that they’re willing to work through it.

A post shared by Trisha Yearwood (@trishayearwood)

“I was always the person in relationships when things got difficult; I was really happy to just bail. I was good at that,” Yearwood told Us. “So in this situation, that’s not an option because this is the love of my life, you know? So you sit down, and you talk it through and, and that gets you better when you get to the other side.”

Since tying the knot in 2005, Yearwood says they’re “better now than ever,” and that’s probably because they took advantage of the last year’s alone time to discuss their marriage’s biggest pain points, which Brooks explained in March on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“I think 99.9% of the people wouldn’t have done what I do, but I thought since we’re here and we ain’t got nowhere to go, let’s just attack some of the hardest things over the 15 years that bugs one of us,” he said. “It was like living in a little house [where] you couldn’t go anywhere, so you couldn’t walk away from the conversation.”

Whatever works to keep these legends together, we’re here for it.

Hello dear friends, thank you for choosing us. In this post on the solsarin site, we will talk about “garth brooks trisha yearwood divorce”.
    Stay with us.
    Thank you for your choice.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood have been married since 2005, but the longevity of their marriage hasn’t kept the tabloids from speculating that the union might be coming to an end. One tabloid insisted that fellow Miranda Lambert was somehow threatening the pair’s marriage. Gossip Cop investigated the rumors at the time, but decided to take a second look at the tale to double–check our judgement.

In January, the Globe ran a cover story about Brooks and Yearwood’s “marriage crisis.” The two were apparently in trouble because Brooks wanted to team up with Lambert for a major tour. Yearwood supposedly “feels humiliated” that Brooks would choose to tour with lambert instead of her and all the fighting “left their marriage hanging by a thread.” A source said.

Trisha is insanely jealous of Garth’s intense interest in Miranda. She’s furious with Garth because she knows Miranda is a notorious man-eater who has a history of trying to get her hooks into married men.

The suspicious source went on to call Yearwood “incredibly insecure” and claimed the “She’s In Love With The Boy” singer was “furious over how close Garth’s grown to Miranda,” adding, “They’re fighting so much about it, it’s left their marriage hanging by a thread.”

did garth brooks and trisha yearwood divorce

Gossip Cop busted this story at the time for so many reasons. No such tour was ever planned. Lambert is married to a former NYPD officer and is not the “maneater” this tabloid makes her out to be. She also called out Brooks for lip-syncing once, so if anything there would be tension between those two.

Plus, Yearwood and Brooks have been married for over fifteen years now, so it’s safe to say they understand each other. Yearwood did an interview just a few weeks before this story came out saying she and Brooks are “friends at the end of the day, and we enjoy each other’s company and like being together.” This story was as wrong as wrong gets.

Brooks and Yearwood did not get divorced. In fact, the two recently hosted a holiday special for CBS. Brooks released a new album entitled Fun as well. Lambert has remained in the eyes of the tabloids. She had been on a solo tour, but that has since been delayed due to COVID-19.

The Globe just could not leave Brooks and Yearwood alone this year. In an especially crass story, it said the two had given up weight loss because “fat’s where it’s at.” This was a straight-up fat-shaming story that said the two were too weak-willed to ever deny a desert.

In another bogus country music story, it claimed Lambert’s ex Blake Shelton had turned into “groomzilla” while he prepared his and Gwen Stefani’s wedding. Shelton and Stefani are waiting to see how COVID-19 plays out before they plan anything. We also busted a story about the two of them fighting over a prenup, for more legitimate sources say the prenup is going swimmingly. This tabloid simply has no real insight into the realm of country music and prefers drama to reality.

If you watched Garth Brooks‘s 2019 A&E documentary Garth Books: The Road I’m On, you likely came to the conclusion that the country music singer and his ex-wife, Sandy Mahl, are on pretty good terms.

What’s the truth about Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks’ marriage? The pair are one of country music’s most famous couples with pitch perfect harmony both on and off the stage. While this duo knows how to put on a show together, they’re each superstars in their own right: Brooks is a Grammy-winning, seven-time CMA Entertainer of the Year, and his three-time Grammy-winning wife is a Grand Ole Opry legend. But despite their professional achievements, marriage is, by far, their biggest accolade. Though the two first met as relative unknowns in the late ’80s, their love story wouldn’t begin until nearly two decades later.

Between touring, raising a family and pursuing other interests — such as a cooking show, as in Yearwood’s case — marriage hasn’t always been easy. But, no matter how busy life gets, Yearwood is still in love with Brooks, and though the two aren’t shy when it comes to professing their love for one another, there’s a lot we didn’t know about their marriage…until now!

Looking at these lovebirds, you’d think Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks were an item as soon as they locked eyes, but you’d be wrong. The two were married to other people when they first met in 1987 at songwriter Kent Blazy’s attic studio; they were there to record a demo together, per CMT. Back then, Brooks was hubby to Sandy Mahl, who he wed the year before meeting Yearwood, according to US Weekly. At the time, Yearwood was the wife of music producer Chris Latham (via Good Housekeeping).

did garth brooks and trisha yearwood divorce

The two remained loyal to their spouses, but Brooks later admitted on The Ellen Show in 2013 that Yearwood made him question his marriage. “You being married, it’s gotta be right,” he said, about trying to rationalize his marriage to Mahl. “You were married in front of God and your family and everything.”

So Brooks and Yearwood remained friends. Yearwood would end up divorcing Latham before tying the knot again in 1994, this time with Robert Reynolds (from The Mavericks), as reported by AP News. Brooks didn’t split from his first wife until 2000, per US Weekly.

Garth Brooks knew Trisha Yearwood was the one when he first met her in the ’80s, early in both their careers. “I felt that feeling like you just met your wife,” he told The Ellen Show in 2013. But Brooks was already married and remained loyal to then-wife Sandy Mahl.

Maybe things would’ve worked out differently had Brooks known the feeling was mutual. During a joint interview with Parade magazine in 2016, Yearwood confessed to knowing Brooks was the one “the minute I met him,” but didn’t realize it at the time.

It’s not like the Brooks and Yearwood were household names, at least not yet, so it’s not like they were starstruck; it was a pure, organic spark. “We hit it off,” Yearwood recalled during a CMT interview. “But I had no idea he’d turn out to be Garth Brooks!” Little did the two know then that they’d not only become country music stars, but that they’d marry each other someday.

  • 200cm to inches
  • Seeing as romance was out of the picture, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks settled for friendship, and supported one another in their professional music careers. According to E! News, once Brooks started making a name for himself, he helped Yearwood land a record contract, and chose her as the opening act for his national tour in 1991. The two even sang duets and backup vocals on each other’s albums.

Despite influencing much of her early career, Brooks never credited himself for Yearwood’s rise. ”To tell you the truth, Trish Yearwood pretty well pulled herself up by her own shoes,” he told the Chicago Tribune during a 2001 interview.

When Brooks split from his first wife in 1999, Yearwood just so happened to be single herself, according to US Weekly. That’s when their friendship blossomed into something more. “[Trisha] was somebody who I always enjoyed being around, and we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did,” Brooks revealed on The Ellen Show. “We started seeing each other after the divorce, [after] we came off tour,” he said. The rest is history!

Being the rockstar entertainer that he is, Garth Brooks proposed to Trisha Yearwood in front of thousands of people — 7,000 to be exact. It was May 2005, and the couple was at Buck Owens’s Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California. The pair were there to watch the unveiling of an eight-foot tall statue of Brooks, according to People.

During the ceremony, Brooks brought his leading lady onstage — not to sing — but to see the statue up close. Afterwards, Brooks pointed out a wedding band fixed to the statue’s ring finger. Then much to Yearwood’s surprise, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes! “Her knees were like Jell-O,” Jerry Hufford, talent coordinator for the country music venue, said about Yearwood’s reaction. “She was totally stunned…It took her a while to regain composure. You could tell she’d been crying.” Talk about a wedding proposal guaranteed to make you cry!

During a joint interview on Live with Kelly in 2016, Yearwood said she’ll never forget that moment, and quipped: “Bakersfield is the most romantic city in the country for me.”

Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks decided to skip the fanfare created by their very public proposal, opting instead for something a little more private and intimate for their actual wedding day. According to People, the couple tied the knot towards the end of 2005 at their Oklahoma home in front of family only. “It’s the perfect Christmas gift to each other,” Brooks said in a statement. “We could not be happier.”

Garth Brooks’ three daughters — who have grown up to be gorgeous – played an important role in their wedding ceremony, seeing as Yearwood doesn’t have kids of her own. From Brooks’ previous marriage to Sandy Mahl, Taylor, August, and Allie also made their commitment to Yearwood official. “We married the girls,” Yearwood explained on the Rachael Ray Show in 2019. “They wore little wedding dresses, we exchanged rings — ’cause they had to say it was okay for me to marry their dad.” She added her anniversary with Brooks is also theirs with the children. Their marriage is truly a family affair!

Don’t call country singer Trisha Yearwood “stepmom.” In the Yearwood-Brooks household, she’s the bonus mom instead. “Stepmom’s very Cinderella. It doesn’t have good connotations,” Yearwood said on the Rachael Ray Show. “And so you’re a bonus mom because the girls have a mom, and I get to be another woman in their life that loves them.” That’s a really wholesome sentiment!

From the looks of her Instagram page, Yearwood close to all three girls — Taylor, August, and Allie – and supports them, even in their careers. Yearwood even had Allie as a special guest on her Food Network show Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, and touted her stepdaughter’s musical skills in an episode teaser with the caption: “To say I am a proud bonus mom is an understatement! Allie, you are my new favorite duet partner (psst! Don’t tell your dad!)”

Marriage is hard work, even if you’re one of country music’s most famous couples, as is the case for Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks. But the two somehow manage to thrive in the marriage department by making each other a priority. “You have to make it a conscious effort to make sure that you put each other first, and we do that, and sometimes it’s not easy,” Yearwood told Good Morning America. It takes a lot of compromise, she added, and it helps the two are best friends and enjoy spending time together. Still, there are some strange facts about Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood’s marriage.

So how do the couple prioritize one another? “We tour together, we try to go everywhere together and we really don’t spend that much time apart,” Yearwood revealed on Live with Kelly in 2016, in a joint interview with Garth Brooks. When asked if they ever get on each other’s nerves, Brooks said no, adding “she’s always right.” Still, Trisha Yearwood has spilled on how husband Garth Brooks annoys her in the past.

Power couple Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are great solo, but they’re even better when they sing together. They’ve performed ballads everywhere, from the CMA Awards to their home studio. Never shy to show the love and affection they have for one another, the pair often hold hands onstage, and aren’t afraid to lean in for an almost kiss during especially emotional performances.

When it comes time for a solo, Brooks and Yearwood are still not far apart. Typically, while one is on stage, the other is in the crowd. Plus, oftentimes the pair dedicate the songs to each other, like when Brooks performed “Stronger Than Me” at the CMA Awards in 2018. “It was not written by me, [but] the second I heard it, I said, ‘Omigosh, that’s what I’d say to Trisha if I was talented enough to write that,'” he told Extra on the red carpet, prior to his CMA performance. Yearwood, who was beside Brooks during the interview, said it’s important to make your spouse feel loved, and what better way than a song? “This is a grand gesture,” she admitted.

A couple that not only sings together, but also gives back to their community together is sure to make it in the long haul. At least, that’s what we hope for Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, who volunteer often with Habitat for Humanity, helping to build affordable housing for families in need.

The couple got involved with the nonprofit when they flew to New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “Garth and I were asked to participate basically in a photo op in New Orleans after Katrina, and we went,” she explained in an interview with SheKnows. “We were supposed to be there for an hour or two, and we ended up staying all day and got involved in swinging a hammer and it was like, “This is our wheelhouse, this is what we want to do.'”

During an interview with Good Morning America about their volunteerism, Brooks and Yearwood pointed at one another when asked who’s better with the power tools. Brooks called his wife “a nail gun diva.” Hilarious!

Trisha Yearwood — who’s undergone a stunning transformation — and Garth Brooks like to spice things up in their marriage by cooking together, or for one another. Seeing as Yearwood is a best-selling cookbook author and host of Trisha’s Southern Kitchen on Food Network, you might think she’s the designated home chef. However, Brooks is pretty handy in the kitchen as well; it pays off anytime Yearwood gets home after a long day of filming her cooking show. “He’s always got something made,” she revealed to Access. “The only thing sexier is when he loads the dishwasher.”

Brooks has even made appearances on his wife’s cooking show. What a supportive husband! Yearwood actually nicknamed her hubby Gartha Stewart (a twist on Martha Stewart, who has her own show on HGTV). “He is a good cook,” she told Extra. “He also gets really excited if he makes like a sandwich that looks good. He’ll take a picture of it.” In this situation, there’s no such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen.

Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks have owned several awe-worthy properties across the country, including a $5 million Malibu beach house, which according to Variety, was purchased by them in 2008; they sold it nearly 10 years later for $7 million.

For years, Brooks and Yearwood resided in Oklahoma, the former’s home state, until his youngest daughter graduated from high school, according to Today. “He adores his children, and there was no way he wasn’t going to be a part of his daughter’s lives on a daily basis,” a source told the Daily Mail. The couple listed the 14,089 square-foot palace in 2014 for approximately $3.5 million.

As of 2015, according to People, Brooks and Yearwood bought a home in Nashville, Tennessee, but because of touring, they didn’t get a chance to enjoy it until almost three years later. Brooks told Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2018 that they built their home from the ground up “just the way that [Yearwood] wanted it.” Once they were able to settle in and hang pictures, he said, it started feeling like home.

Trisha Yearwood was there for Garth Brooks following his divorce from Sandy Mahl. Brooks confessed that she helped him get through that rough patch while promoting his documentary, The Road I’m On, in New York (via US Weekly). “I just said goodbye to music, got divorced, moved back to Oklahoma and left Nashville,” he said. “I was living with three strange women that I did not know. They were 8, 6, and 4.” Then, in the midst of this “crash course” in the fairer sex, his “best friend showed up.” That best friend was Yearwood, of course.

Years later, the married couple, who wed in 2005, faced another obstacle, along with the rest of the world: COVID-19. Brooks confessed in a virtual press conference (via People) that his daughter, Allie Brooks, tested positive for the virus. “None of us has ever seen this before,” he said. “As parents like you, like me, all you do is pray your knee bones off.”

Brooks and Yearwood had to quarantine as well, as they work with their son-in-law. Fortunately, everyone was okay in the end.

Things might’ve been different had Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood not been married when they first met back in the ’80s, before either of their careers took off. But that might not necessarily have been for the better, according to Brooks, who entertained that idea during a live Q&A with his wife (via KTLA 5). “Our careers would not be what they were in the ’90s or our marriage would not have survived the ’90s,” Brooks said. “I think everything kind of happens in its time.”

Before tying the knot in 2005, Brooks had been married once before, and Yearwood twice. “I’m not proud to have been divorced,” Yearwood told a reporter following the Q&A. But said that she and Brooks got together at a good time in both their lives. “I also know at that point in my life what I want and what I don’t want,” she said, referring to when she wed Brooks at the age of 41.

Trisha Yearwood feels lucky to share her life with Garth Brooks, and believes that they hit the jackpot when they finally found their way to each other. “We’re with the love of our lives, and we also get to do what we love to do for a living,” she shared in an interview with Extra. “As long as we can do that we’re going to do that.”

It’s safe to say that Brooks feels the same. Always the romantic, he said during a joint Q&A session with his wife (via KTLA 5) that he loves doing everything together with her, from raising a family to touring. “I can just be in the same room with her not doing anything she’s doing, but just knowing you’re breathing the same air kind of thing, knowing…she’s happy doing what she’s doing, that kind of makes you feel at ease,” he said. Be still our hearts! We can’t wait to see what else these two lovebirds, and songbirds, have up their sleeves — and we hope that it’s together.

Before finding love with fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks was married for 15 years to another woman. The two met and married in the ’80s, but by the new millennium, the two had called it quits. Here’s the truth about Garth Brooks’ first wife, Sandy Mahl.

Mahl and Brooks met in the early 1980s, but sources disagree over how the two actually found one another. Some sources suggest that they first met while Brooks was a bouncer at the Tumbleweed Ballroom in Stillwater, Oklahoma (per Showbiz Cheat Sheet). Mahl was reportedly about to be a part of a bar fight when Brooks intervened. Other reports, such as that of The Sun, claim that the two met in college at Oklahoma State University. Regardless of how they met, however, it is agreed upon that the two bonded over music and Mahl went on to move to Nashville with Brooks and helped him start his music career.

Following a whirlwind love affair, the two married in 1986 and officially divorced in 2001 (per Wide Open Country). Read on to find out what pulled them apart.

Speaking in the documentary “Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On,” Sandy Mahl shared that the time she and Garth Brooks spent apart is what did them in. “People constantly wanting your attention and yanking and pulling on him,” she said (per Good Housekeeping). “He’d be gone eight to 10 weeks at a time. He’d come home, [and] there would be number-one parties, or shows, or CMAs, or ACMs, American Music Awards, so it was constantly going. But we both grew apart really, really quickly.”

Despite growing apart during their marriage, Brooks and Mahl are on good terms now. Following the documentary’s release, Brooks told Us Weekly that he learned a lot from her comments in the film and still holds her in high regard. “She was phenomenal,” the country singer-songwriter said.

Brooks married wife Trisha Yearwood in 2005 and the couple is still going strong. But it is refreshing to hear past partners speak so kindly about one another, especially when fame and fortune comes into play.

Country music superstar Garth Brooks‘ two marriages span the last few decades, starting with first wife Sandy Mahl and ending with current wife Trisha Yearwood. Today, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are country music royalty and seemingly the perfect couple. The two are constantly quoted as saying how in love they are after 15 years of marriage. The history of their relationship, however, includes some very important people— Garth and Sandy’s three daughters!

Brooks met Mahl at Oklahoma State when he was working as a bouncer in a college bar. The two became college sweethearts and married in 1986. The union resulted in three daughters, Taylor Mayne Pearl Brooks (born 1992), August Anna Brooks (born 1994), and Allie Colleen Brooks (born 1996).

During the marriage, Garth’s career took off and he became the megastar we know today. While he was getting started in Nashville, he met fellow musician Trisha Yearwood in 1987, 13 months after Brooks married Mahl. “I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife,” Brooks once told Ellen DeGeneres. Still, Brooks says he was committed to making his marriage to Sandy work and would try to do so for many more years.

“Being married, it’s gotta be right. This is who you went to college with and you were married in front of God and your family and everybody.” Still, at the end of the day, “There comes that time where you’re looking at the rest of your life and going, ‘How do you want to live it?,’” Brooks shared.

However, life as a touring artist and his feelings for Yearwood took their toll on the marriage. In 2000, Brooks announced his “retirement” from country music and cited raising his daughters as the reason for the decision. Garth and Sandy divorced in 2001.

Sandy is reportedly still single and has never remarried. She is a successful businesswoman as well as a wildlife rehabilitator in Oklahoma. Sandy is the Vice President and Co-Founder of Wild Heart Ranch.

    According to the organization’s website:

“Sandy Brooks has been part of Wild Heart Ranch since shortly after she moved home from Nashville. A mother dog and her pups were dumped at Sandy’s gate and taken to Wild Heart Ranch for help. Sandy later called to check on them and found out they went to a wildlife rescue. Sandy, passionate about wildlife rehabilitation, jumped on board to get licensed by the State and assist with the work of raising hundreds of infant wild animals. Several years later, Sandy assisted in founding and funding the non profit so it could expand and grow and be a full time, all species, all situation facility.”

Brooks started seeing Yearwood after the end of his first marriage and the couple were married in 2005.  Trisha Yearwood knew there was chemistry the very first time she ever sang with future husband Garth Brooks. “It felt like we’d sung together forever,” she has said about the first duet. Though married to his first wife at the time, Brooks helped Yearwood land her first record deal. In 1991 she hit it big with the hit song “She’s in Love with the Boy” and was the first female country music singer to sell 1 million copies of her debut album.  After many years of friendship, Brooks proposed to Yearwood on stage at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace before 7,000 cheering fans in 2005.

  • With all three children finished with college, Garth says he’s never been happier. “I never knew it could be like this,” he says with a smile. “I never knew that every day you could feel like this.”
