I opened up the corner they were peeing in after closing it off for a few days. They didn’t pee there for a couple days but now they started again. Maybe because it’s right outside the x pen where their litter boxes are?

I noticed the pee smells like soy sauce or fishy miso soup. Does this mean anything? Maybe an infection? When I was cleaning the pen there was more pee in the back corner where the hidey house is. It smelled the same and so did the litter boxes (it was litter box day today).

  • 200 kmh to mph

  • Its perfectly normal for your bunnies pee to smell sort of soy-sauce-y, it just means they could be a little bit dehydrated. How many water bowls do you have in their enclosure? To stop your rabbits from peeing in the corner I would recommend putting their litter box in that corner, they are trying to tell you they want their litter box to be there. Hope this can help! ?

Rabbit urine can smell like onion or soy sauce, but a very strong odor might suggest that you have too little litter in the boxes or that you don’t have the best litter. I use wood stove pellets for my bun, because theyre cheap and highly absorbant and can be composted.

Rabbits are particular about where they pee. One method that might work is to place a litter box in the corner they pee in, then gradually, over a couple of weeks even, move the litter box little by little until it is where you want it. Don’t go too fast, because that won’t “fool” them. ?

Hmmm I have two big water bowls I refill morning and night. It would still smell when he would pee on the floor. The pee hasn’t smelled like this in a while though! So whatever it was has stopped.

I’ll keep this stuff in mind if it happens again, thank you!

Some foods that make your pee smell are totally healthy. Asparagus, for starters, gives your urine that signature smell because of its high asparagusic acid content. When this compound is broken down during digestion, you’re left with the stinky culprits: sulfur-containing chemicals such as methanethiol and S-methyl thioesters (which, turns out, only some people can smell).

Asparagus isn’t the only food that will give your urine a distinct odor, however. Keep reading for more reasons your pee might have you saying pee-ew!

If you’ve been snacking on Brussels sprouts wings lately, your pee is about to give you away. When your body breaks down the veggie during digestion, it produces methyl mercaptan, a gas that’s well-known for making your urine smell less-than-stellar.

Onions make you cry, and they also make your urine stinky. Like Brussels sprouts, methyl mercaptan occurs naturally in the vegetable. Along with changing your pee, the gas is also responsible for bad breath.

Yep, eating fish could cause your urine to smell fishy, too. According to the University of California, Berkeley, those who have the metabolic disorder trimethylaminuria can’t properly break down the compound trimethylamine. Because of that, the compound builds up and exits the body via sweat, your breath, and urine.

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, expect a scent. When your body breaks it down, byproducts of coffee called metabolites wind up in your urine. And the result is a coffee-like smell when you go to the bathroom. It also serves as a great reminder that you might want to cut back on the Starbucks a bit.

Learn more about the benefits of coffee in the video below:

  • you should limit your communication with the
  • Curry is certainly comforting during the winter months, but it might come at a cost. Because cumin—one of its prime ingredients—contains sulfur compounds, it can cause your pee to stink.

Garlic and onions are in the same family, so it’s no wonder both pungent-smelling veggies also product strong-smelling urine. But there are plenty of benefits that come from dealing with the stench, like its ability to fight inflammation, cancer, and protect your liver.

Watch the video below to learn about the health benefits of garlic:

After a night with one too many margaritas, your body’s most important goal is getting all that alcohol out of your system. According to clinical psychologist John Mayer, PhD, it does so through oxidation, a process that breaks down the toxins in alcohol and excretes them through your breath, sweat, and—you guessed it—urine.

Phew! Not all foods produce foul-smelling pee. One that actually makes your urine smell good is pineapple. When you eat the high-sugar fruit, sometimes your body fluids start smelling sweet, too.

According to urologist Michael Ingber, MD, there are reasons besides what you eat that could tweak your pee’s scent. “Lots of things contribute to the odor of urine. Some may be normal, others may be a sign that something is wrong,” he says. Here, Dr. Ingber highlights the most common non-diet-related reasons for a change in urine smell, including when to see a doctor.

“Hydration status affects not only the color of urine, but also the odor,” Dr. Ingber says. He explains that when you’re dehydrated, the kidneys concentrate the urine and hold on to excess water. This, he says, changes your pee’s smell along with its color (which you may notices goes from clear or light yellow to a darker hue).

Dr. Ingber also says that certain medications can change the way your pee smells, primarily sulfa drugs, which are used to treat infections as well as diabetes. “These medications can cause urine to have a rotten egg smell,” he says.

“Rarely, certain genetic conditions can cause urine odor. For example, maple syrup urine disease is a rare disease that affects the body’s ability to metabolize certain amino acids,” Dr. Ingber says. “If you have this condition—usually diagnosed early in life—your urine may smell like, you guessed it: maple syrup.” (Please speak with a doctor if your urine regularly smells like maple syrup; this condition can lead to organ damage.)

Sometimes, Dr. Ingber says pee changes smell because of an infection, such as E. coli or staph (Staphylococcal). So if you have one of these infections, a change in urine could be a possible side effect.

Dr. Ingber says having excess ketones can also cause pee to smell differently. “We see this in people who have diabetes when their sugars aren’t well controlled, or when they get into a ‘ketoacidosis’ crisis,” he says. “This is a medical emergency, and requires urgent attention.”

In general, if you aren’t sure what’s causing your pee to smell different than usual, it’s best to see a urologist who can see if it’s related to one of the non-diet causes highlighted above—and help you get the necessary treatment. Dr. Ingber says people who are pregnant or have diabetes or an autoimmune condition are especially encouraged to see a doctor if their pee smell changes and they aren’t sure why. That way, the doctor can run tests to make sure there isn’t an infection or other problem.

“There are some home devices one can use now, which are really cool, and often can help you avoid traveling to a doctor,” he adds. “For example, ScanWell Health has an app which turns your smartphone into our $15,000 urinalysis machine we use in the office. You can pee on a urine test strip, the app will scan it, and tell you the likelihood of it being an infection. If it’s positive, you can connect with a doctor on the app to get antibiotics.”

The bottom line is that what you eat can absolutely change the way your pee smells. If you’ve been loading up on any of the foods highlighted on the list above, chances are you will notice a slight change. But if you have any reason to believe it could be due to a cause other than diet, book some face time with your doc. It could be the yellow flag your body’s waving to grab your attention.

    Is this cause for concern?

Urine is made up of water and a small concentration of waste products. Urine typically has a subtle odor of its own, but this can change or fluctuate for a number of reasons. In some cases, your urine may even take on a fishy smell.

Although this is usually temporary and easily remedied, it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying condition that requires more advanced treatment.

Keep reading to find out what may be behind your symptoms, and what you can do to find relief.

Your urine contains some of the chemical compounds found in food you’ve recently consumed. These compounds will carry some of the food’s scent into your urine.

    soy sauce smells like pee

With that in mind, it’s unsurprising that eating fish can cause your urine to have a fishy smell.

Other foods and drinks that can cause this include:

Dehydration can also cause or aggravate the fishy smell in your urine. When you’re dehydrated, there’s less water to dilute the concentrations of chemicals. This will give your urine a stronger smell.

You can avoid foods known to cause fishy-smelling urine, but this can be difficult to do. Instead, make sure you drink plenty of water — especially when drinking caffeine — to help dilute the scent and stay hydrated.

A UTI can cause bacteria from the infection to contaminate the urine, resulting in a distinct fishy smell. UTIs are more common in women than men.

    Other symptoms include:

  • wikianswers.
  • If your symptoms haven’t disappeared within 24 hours, see your doctor. They’ll prescribe antibiotics to help eradicate the infection before it spreads to the kidneys.

Bacterial vaginosis occurs when there is too much “bad” bacteria in the vagina, disrupting the balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria. This can cause a grayish, fishy-smelling vaginal discharge that may be noticeable when urinating.

Some women with bacterial vaginosis won’t experience any symptoms.

If symptoms are present, they may include:

Sometimes bacterial vaginosis will go away on its own. If your symptoms persist for a week or more, see your doctor. Your doctor can treat it with antibiotics, though it may return after treatment is over.

Trimethylaminuria is a rare metabolic disorder that occurs when the body is unable to break down certain compounds properly. This includes fishy-smelling trimethylamine.

Trimethylamine is produced in the intestines after consuming certain types of food that are high in protein. With trimethylaminuria, trimethylamine is released into the urine instead of being broken down.

Trimethylaminuria is inherited, and there is no cure. However, you can reduce your symptoms by avoiding foods that trigger symptoms.

    These include:

Prostatitis is an acute inflammation of the prostate gland in men. It’s caused by a bacterial infection. It can progress quickly. The bacteria in the urine can cause it to smell like fish.

    Other symptoms may include:

If you suspect prostatitis, see your doctor. Your doctor will prescribe you antibiotics to treat the infection.

While you’re waiting for the antibiotics to work, your doctor may prescribe you alpha blockers. These relax the bladder neck and reduce painful urination. Anti-inflammatory drugs —including over-the-counter options like ibuprofen (Advil) — can also be effective.

Kidney stones that are moving into or from the kidneys can cause an infection somewhere in the urinary tract. This infection will affect the urine, and can cause urine that smells like fish. It may also cause blood in the urine or cloudy urine.

Kidney stones can cause severe pain that radiates from the side and back down towards the groin. This pain will come in waves and fluctuate in intensity. It may cause vomiting and severe nausea.

If an infection is present, you may also have a fever and chills.

Some kidney stones will pass on their own, but if you’re experiencing severe pain you should see your doctor.

Your doctor can prescribe pain medication to make your symptoms more bearable. They can also prescribe an alpha blocker to relax the bladder and make it easier for the stone to pass.

If the stone is larger and at risk to become stuck in the urinary tract, your doctor may do surgery to remove it.

Although liver problems usually don’t cause urine that smells like fish, it’s possible.

This is especially true of liver failure. This occurs when the liver isn’t functioning properly, and is unable to process toxins as it should. These toxins are then released in the urine, causing the strong smell.

If liver problems are causing fish-smelling urine, you’re likely to notice other symptoms, too. This includes:

If you’re experiencing symptoms like these, see your doctor. They may be a sign of an underlying liver problem or a complication of an already-diagnosed condition.

Your individual treatment plan will depend on the diagnosis. Some liver problems will be treated with lifestyle changes, including a modified diet and potentially losing weight. Others may require treatment, including dialysis, or surgery.

Cystitis refers to inflammation of the bladder. It’s often caused by a bacterial infection, such as a UTI. The bacteria from the infection can result in a strong fish smell in the urine.

    Other symptoms include:

If you suspect you have cystitis, see your doctor. They will likely prescribe you antibiotics to get rid of the infection before it spreads to the kidneys. You can use a heating pad to relieve discomfort. Drinking plenty of water can help flush the infection from your system.

Phenylketonuria is an uncommon inherited disorder that raises the number of phenylalanine in the blood. This can cause a build-up of the substance in the body, as well as a high concentration of phenylalanine in the urine. This can cause a fishy odor.

Phenylketonuria usually affects infants. If the gene has been passed on to your child, they will start to display signs of phenylketonuria within the first several months of being born.

    soy sauce smells like pee

    Other symptoms include:

Phenylketonuria can’t be cured, but treatment can be highly effective at managing symptoms. It’s essential to follow a diet low in phenylalanine.

This means avoiding foods containing the substance, such as:

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a protozoan parasite.

Some people with trichomoniasis won’t experience any symptoms. In some women, however, the infection causes vaginal discharge that has a strong fish-like odor. This discharge may be clear, white, yellow, or greenish.

    Other symptoms include:

If you suspect trichomoniasis, see your doctor. They’ll prescribe oral antibiotics to clear the infection. To prevent reinfection, wait 7 to 10 days after both you and your partner have finished treatment to resume sexual activity.

If your urine has started to smell like fish and there isn’t an obvious reason why — like diet or dehydration — make an appointment to see your doctor within the next couple of days. You can book an appointment with a urologist in your area using our Healthline FindCare tool.

You should see your doctor as soon as possible if you’re experiencing:

You should seek emergency medical attention if you’re experiencing:

In these cases, you may have a kidney stone, or an infection that is spreading to your kidneys.
